Many visitors leave the resorts of Punta Cana to explore the limestone caves and waterways of Los Haitises. The drive is much faster than it used to be. Here is what you need to know about making the trip and what to expect on a full-day excursion.

How long is the drive from Punta Cana to Los Haitises?

The drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way via the new Miches highway.

You will travel north from the resort areas to Sabana de la Mar or Caño Hondo. Tour operators typically pick you up from your hotel lobby between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM. Once you arrive at the coast, you transfer to a boat to explore the park.

What is the ecological contrast like?

You leave white sand beaches for dense humid forests and 30-meter limestone karsts.

The park receives about 2,000 mm (79 inches) of rain annually. This sustains four distinct types of mangroves. Instead of manicured resort grounds, you navigate natural waterways and walk into sea caves covered in 500-to-1,000-year-old Taíno rock art.
